Woman Survives 16-Foot Plunge Down Elevator Shaft In Jersey City: Authorities

A 53-year-old woman was in stable condition after she fell 16 feet down an elevator shaft in a Jersey City apartment building on Monday, March 18, authorities said.

The woman was found 16 feet under the first floor in the basement of 11 Gifford Ave., lying on her back, when Jersey City officers arrived just before 3:40 p.m., according to Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, a spokeswoman for the mayor's office.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for abrasions to both legs, as well as pain in her left elbow, Wallace-Scalcione said.

Her family told NBC New York she had suffered a broken elbow and a stomach tear.

An investigation is ongoing, Wallace-Scalcione said
